Another local customer of ours brought us his automatic Rev-up 350Z with the APS twin turbo kit already installed. Although he had previously been using the Haltech EMS, he gave us a visit for our tuning expertise.

APS-Auto-350Z-1

With this being a car that gets daily driven for most of the year, we wanted to clean up any drivability issues and make as much reliable power as possible on our Dyno Dynamics. Despite using the automatic transmission, a TransGo valve body upgrade kit had been installed to help with shifting at these power levels.

APS-Auto-350Z-2

This particular car utilized the newest public version of the Haltech software, which we have been privately testing on shop cars in previous weeks. Despite some initial hurdles from the new software, specific only to automatic models, our unmatched Haltech experience allowed us to produce nearly 390 whp between 9-10 psi. Wheel torque measured near a constant 350 throughout the entire powerband.

APS Auto 350Z 3

Between this much improved flat torque curve and constant power increase with the automatic transmission, this is one great daily driver. The fresh looking Daytona Blue paint is complemented nicely by a new Alliance big brake kit behind the popular Volk SF-Winning wheels. It’s great when the looks match the impressive power.

Supra Wiring Overhaul and Tune

Tuning and engine building are two specialties that we pride ourselves in, but wiring is an important factor of any heavily modified setup, and is often overlooked. Many of our projects, such as this customer’s Supra, involve cleaning up areas which may have been overlooked by other shops, or simply done incorrectly. This particular car has all of the right parts to go fast, including a 76mm turbo and TH400 3-speed automatic transmission, but could never complete a quality pass at the drag strip due to problems. Upon diagnosing what the car would need, we found an absolute monstrosity of wiring from the engine bay, interior, engine management, and into the trunk for the fuel system and nitrous.

Supra Re-Wiring Job 1

The car’s owner requested that the entire electronics system of the car be re-wired. We started by cutting out the majority of wiring, including wires that were spliced, twisted, soldered and taped together more than 15 times in three feet.

Supra Re-Wiring Job 2

The outdated Autronic EMS was removed in favor of the new Haltech Sport 2000 engine management system, paired with a M&W Pro Ignition box. A Mil-spec engine harness was fit to the car, and the remaining systems, such as nitrous, fuel, and fans, were also professionally wired in-house.

Supra Re-Wiring Job 4

After a dyno session on low boost and one small stage of nitrous, the car was loaded into our trailer and off to the drag strip to be delivered to the customer, eagerly waiting to make a pass. We were only able to get in two passes before the track closed for the night, and the first was just a shake-down run to get a feel for the car. The second pass was a bit more aggressive, and the car crossed the quarter mile finish line in the 10-second range with ease.

Stay tuned as we turn this Supra up to it’s potential and see it dip deep into the single digits!

Hal’s Personal 350Z Testing

Our in house tuner, Hal, has a 350Z of his own that he enjoys playing with after hours. Much of what we sell is tested on our own cars first, so we’re sure that it works for our customers. Our drag car has always been one of the “test mules,” but Hal’s car receives credit as well for pushing the limits of his VQ35 so you don’t have to. This particular 350Z is a daily driver for the most part, capable of making big power while reliably running on regular pump gas.

Hal' s Personal 350Z Testing 1

Hal’s 350Z features an Injected Performance Stage 1 shortblock, our most popular 3.5L build, with Eagle rods and CP pistons. No head work has been done except for Brian Crower Stage 3 cams, matching springs and retainers, and the Cosworth intake manifold. This dyno run of 613 whp shows the typical power it makes on 93 octane pump gas and no type of meth injection or similar.

These results show the benefits of a properly sized turbo and piping setup. In this case, it is a GT4202R. Power is made even at the 8,000rpm mark, well above a stock VQ35.

Hal' s Personal 350Z Testing 3

After adding a bit of Q16 and turning the boost up to 28psi, Hal continued to tune with the Haltech to reach a final level of 772 whp. Stay tuned as Hal prepares to get ready for the track to make a few shakedown passes.

Travel Tuning

When traveling to our shop for a tune is not an option, we fly to our customers. Last week Hal was down in Houston, TX breaking in a new VQ35. Ernie (aka Niceguy on the forums) has been hard at work in the garage, outfitting his G35 coupe with a new built 3.5L vq35de, SFR twin 60-1 turbo kit, plenum spacer, valve-body upgrade, Precision injectors, return fuel system, custom 3″ exhaust, Haltech dual widebands, and of course a Haltech Platinum 350z ems. After break-in tuning and driveability tuning it was time for the fun part - power tuning. The first dyno run was just shy of 400whp and it was not long until we hit his 500whp goal. Impressive horsepower through the Nissan automatic. Due to high intake air temperatures with the SFR intercoolers (160+°F) we decided to stop here and a more efficient intercooler is in the works. With the tune and the dual widebands at work, the owner was impressed that the car ‘truly drives like stock’.

G35 with Powerlab GT35R becomes 400+whp daily driver

A 2006 Infiniti G35 Coupe was dropped off at the Injected Performance bay doors, equipped with a Powerlab GT35R turbo kit, Haltech Platinum 350Z EMS, and Deatschwerks 600cc injectors. The request was simple: check over the power tune and clean up the driving/cruising tune.

The initial dyno tests revealed this was one strong VQ35DE, breaking 440whp as it came to us at 10psi. The 2006 G35 has a Revup VQ35, though the tune had exhaust cam timing disabled. We enabled cam timing,  picked up significant midrange power, and fixed the top end loss it had shown on the first dyno pull. At that point, the VQ35DE was outputting over 450whp at 10psi. This car was still running on the stock engine, and needed to stay that way for some time - so the boost was decreased to 8psi, and the tune was softened up. The final outcome was a safe 424whp.

The car came to us overly rich during cruising, which was quickly remedied by a proper tune on our load bearing Dyno Dynamics and followed up by a street test. A wideband air fuel sensor was wired to the Haltech and O2 correction was enabled to ensure things would continue to run in top form. The customer requested the speed limiter be removed, idle decreased (from a previous increase), and CEL removed - simple tasks all handled by the Injected Performance VQ35DE ECU Reflash. After customer pickup, the car made a 5 hour drive home where it reportedly achieved 26-28mpg.

Overall impressions of the Powerlab GT35R turbo kit are positive. It is one fast spooling kit; able to achieve full boost before 2900rpm and still make impressive top end power. Check out the pictures and video below.

Over the New Years holiday we opened the doors to a special out-of-town Infiniti owner. After a 600 mile drive on a base map, the car made it to our facility for a tune on the newly installed Haltech Platinum 350Z EMS. The car was outfitted with the new APS Twin Turbo tuner kit for G35 and an APS Tall Boy Intake Plenum. Props to the owner for installing the turbo kit and other mods himself, very nice work! The APS tuner kit comes without fuel and engine management, so the customer installed Deatschwerks 600cc injectors, a Walbro fuel pump, and of course, the Haltech Platinum 350Z plug and play standalone with boost control solenoid.

After a quick change to NGK Iridium 1-step colder spark plugs with proper gap, Hal was able to quickly achieve the goal of ~400whp on our Dyno Dynamics dynamometer at 10psi. As seen in the dyno chart below, the VQ35DE spools the APS twin turbo setup quickly and gives this G35 a nice strong powerband. The G35 produces more than 300ft/lb of torque from 2900rpm to redline.

This week we had the privilege of tuning Mike’s 350Z, who drove 6+ hours to have a Haltech installed and tuned here. We fit a Haltech Platinum 350Z EMS, boost control solenoid, wideband, and boost gauge to his blue 350Z. We quickly found the limits of the injectors included with the Turbonetics kit, and replaced them with Deatschwerks 600cc injectors. On a safe daily-driver pumpgas tune we were able to achieve 415whp on our Dyno Dynamics at 14psi. The car left operating like stock, and makes impressive power considering a normal Turbonetics kit produces ~340whp on our dyno.

Mike called the following day and said he needs wider tires :)
