Hal’s New 6-Speed 350Z Record!

After an unusually snowy winter in the area, we were fortunate enough to enjoy a beautiful afternoon of racing at a local drag event this past Sunday. The Kentucky Horsepower Shootout, held annually at the Mountain Park Dragway in Clay City, KY, would be the perfect test for Hal’s street car to stretch its’ legs after a relatively boring winter for the car. Other than a wash, oil change, a new set of wheels, and a fresh fill of VP race fuel, the car remains completely unchanged from Hal’s venture into the 9-second range on his first trip to the strip with this car.

In the video below, you can witness the first full pass of the car in the competition round. Despite losing via a red-light start, a first for Hal, he went on to make a blazing fast pass at 9.34 while trapping 145 mph. This is over a half-second quicker than the car’s previous best. With this time, Hal and the entire Injected Performance crew have added “fastest 6-speed 350Z” to our resume, fitting nicely with our existing claim of the fastest automatic (Powerglide) 350Z as well. Additional details of the setup follow the video:

Injected Powered 4.2L 350Z Blasts Off

This customer’s car has been years in the making, but all of the time invested is beginning to pay off! Over a year ago, we began working with this customer after another shop was unsuccessful in “trying new things” in a stroked VQ35 package that had been sold to him. After visiting our facility, seeing how we operate, and taking a look at our success in drag racing, he decided to go with one of our stroker VQ35 motors. This was just the beginning of his journey, as he decided to bypass his current Greddy turbo kit and go with a custom setup of twin 62mm turbos, fabricated by a local shop.

After a Haltech was installed and tuned by his local tuner, In Tune Motor Sports, clutch issues were found on the first trip to the drag strip. After our recommendation for a Tilton triple cerametallic clutch, widely used in the fastest Supras and growing popular in the VQ world, we promptly shipped out a kit for him to install. At the very next trip to the drag strip, he accomplished a 6.3 second pass in the 1/8th mile, which is good enough for a 9 second pass down the quarter mile.

Now that some setup bugs have been resolved, we look forward to turning this engine up on a high boost tune and a trip to the quarter mile drag strip! We would also like to wish a congratulations for sticking with the project and seeing your hard work pay off. Featured below is one of the low 6-second runs towards the end of the day. Although a time slip was not readily available at the time of this post, 60′ times reached as low as 1.38.

Supra Wiring Overhaul and Tune

Tuning and engine building are two specialties that we pride ourselves in, but wiring is an important factor of any heavily modified setup, and is often overlooked. Many of our projects, such as this customer’s Supra, involve cleaning up areas which may have been overlooked by other shops, or simply done incorrectly. This particular car has all of the right parts to go fast, including a 76mm turbo and TH400 3-speed automatic transmission, but could never complete a quality pass at the drag strip due to problems. Upon diagnosing what the car would need, we found an absolute monstrosity of wiring from the engine bay, interior, engine management, and into the trunk for the fuel system and nitrous.

Supra Re-Wiring Job 1

The car’s owner requested that the entire electronics system of the car be re-wired. We started by cutting out the majority of wiring, including wires that were spliced, twisted, soldered and taped together more than 15 times in three feet.

The outdated Autronic EMS was removed in favor of the new Haltech Sport 2000 engine management system, paired with a M&W Pro Ignition box. A Mil-spec engine harness was fit to the car, and the remaining systems, such as nitrous, fuel, and fans, were also professionally wired in-house.

Supra Re-Wiring Job 4

After a dyno session on low boost and one small stage of nitrous, the car was loaded into our trailer and off to the drag strip to be delivered to the customer, eagerly waiting to make a pass. We were only able to get in two passes before the track closed for the night, and the first was just a shake-down run to get a feel for the car. The second pass was a bit more aggressive, and the car crossed the quarter mile finish line in the 10-second range with ease.

Stay tuned as we turn this Supra up to it’s potential and see it dip deep into the single digits!

Fun at Import Face Off Ohio 2009

After an unsuccessful trip to last year’s Import Face Off in Columbus, OH with our drag car (canceled due to rain), Hal decided to take his freshly tuned 350Z up for the race. Having only changed wheels and added race gas, Hal unloaded his daily driver 350Z for a beautiful day of racing, watching, and having fun. Despite bringing the motor home and stacker trailer, Hal maintained a low-key effort, focusing on enjoying the races with friends. This was his first full event for testing the car on the drag strip, so there was much to be learned in testing the car.

Import Face Off OH 2009 1

The first pass resulted in a respectable 10.8 at 145 mph quarter mile. After qualifying for first in his current class of about 30 competitors, Hal bumped up to the Forced Induction Pro class, where he would eventually also qualify first. His second pass overall showed a noticeable improvement at 10.1 with a similar trap speed. In between passes, the guys had a chance to get up on top of the motor home for a few pictures of the turnout on a cool and comfortable afternoon.

On just the third pass, showing how experience behind the wheel of a relatively new setup can drastically help, Hal fired off a 9.891 at just about 149 mph. This is almost exactly one second off the time from our own drag car at the same event last year. Needless to say, Hal is extremely happy with the results of his Injected Performance Stage 1+ short block and mildly modified head. The properly sized single turbo and piping setup makes for an amazing powerband that can still put the power down through the stock six-speed. As mentioned before, we like pushing the limits on our cars so that your builds don’t have to!

Sadly, in Hal’s first competition run, he got a bit “drift-happy” and let out after nearly reaching a 45 degree angle with his car at two separate points down the track. It wasn’t until the slowest qualifier, his competition for the first round, passed him until he remembered he was in an elimination round. We can forgive him though; I think we’d all be a little overwhelmed if we just found out our daily driver was capable of running 9 second times! Despite losing in the first round of the competition itself, it was a fun day for Injected Performance, and Hal joined the ranks of the fastest 350Z’s in the country. Although he has no plans to convert his car into a full drag build, we are still proud for him and his new best time.

Injected Performance 350Z Wins BOTI Texas

On a scorching summer day in Ennis, TX, our own Hal took the win for the Street Tuner class at Round 3 of the 2009 Battle of the Imports series in Ennis, TX. Air temperatures climbed to over 100 while track temperatures were measured to reach nearly 150 degrees.

Traction became an issue, as Hal managed a modest 9.559 at 156mph to quality for second in the Street Tuner class. Ross Baird, the number one qualifier, ran 9.320 in his 1994 Supra, but broke shortly afterward in the first round. Although capable of high 8-second passes, Hal piloted the reliable as ever Injected Performance 350Z to the finale with solid, clean passes.

Nearly matching his qualifying time, Hal crossed the finish line unopposed at the end of the day with a 9.558 at 152mph to take the Street Tuner win over Tony Ramadan’s RX7, who also broke. Despite a long winter and spring break for our drag racing efforts, we hope to continue to push the limits of our drag 350Z through 2009.

John Reese Breaks 1/4 Mile GTR Record

Over the weekend, NAGTROC member John Reese bested his own fastest 1/4th mile time in a Nissan GTR with a blazing fast 10.53 @ 128.27. Unfortunately, a few launches later, the transmission finally let go after nearly 100 launces with Nissan’s launch control. Modifications include: HKS GT570 kit with ECU tuning, Amuse exhaust, Harman Motive intake, and lightweight Volk TE37s with drag radials. John already seems to have transmission upgrades in the works, and we are glad for enthusiasts like him to break the barriers and play the guinea pigs for the rest of us.

The Injected Performance Drag 350Z was able to make an encore appearance in the pages of November 2008’s Turbo Magazine. This glimpse into the magazine shows the Injected Performance 350Z doing a nice smoky burnout during Battle of the Imports (BOTI) at MIR in Maryland recently.

Import Face Off in Columbus Full of Rain

The Injected Performance 350Z and 4G63-powered Conquest of Bill Walls made the trek up north to Columbus, OH for the Import Face Off at National Trial Raceway. We showed up bright and early Sunday morning and proceeded to wait in line to get into the event. Once we arrived at tech inspections, we waited in line, and then waited in line some more in grid. Due to the rules of the event, we were limited to running in the Outlaw class with cars half of our weight. However, Hal managed a very respectable 8.89 @ 160mph on his first pass. That time held up as the quickest qualifying time for the event. Unfortunately, the event was cut short due to heavy rain, but we still had a pretty good time. The delay gave us a chance to sample some of the finest crock pot BBQ sandwiches in all of Ohio while we waited for the storm to pass. Here are some pictures from the event that we were able to snap off before the rain sent us home early.

502 Underground - Ohio Valley Raceway

We took the 350Z over to Louisville this past Friday for the 502 Underground 1/8th mile shootout. The rules for the event were pretty simple: no time slips, race off of a flagger, single elimination, heads up, winner take all. Unfortunately ,we didn’t take away the prize money, but this event was a lot of fun and a great chance for the Injected Performance crew to get some much needed experience running the 350Z in the 1/8th mile. We tried some different setups on the car in an attempt to get some better 60 foot times out of her with some very promising success. We look forward to taking the 350Z up to Columbus, Ohio on August 24, for Import Face Off. We are hopeful to see some personal bests out of the 350Z that day. Hope to see you all there. Thanks for all the support.
